Has Advertising in the Digital Age Gone Too Far

 

For years, the bridge between what is legal and what is ethical has clouded the business realm. Although something may not be illegal, business owners and decision makers must ask the question, “Is it ethical?” Ethics is defined by our textbook as “moral principles and values that govern the actions and decisions of an individual or group”. These ethics are also a big component in advertising, evermore so during the digital media age. Many questions can arise when advertising as to how ethical the tactic really is.

Over the past decade, technology has really taken off. We have phones that can listen and react to our commands, devices that can shop for us just by using our voice, and so much more. Social media has also taken off in the same time frame. People stay connected to the outside world through the use of Twitter, Instagram, Pinterest, LinkedIn, among others.

Extinction Can’t Be Fixed Campaign from WWF

If I couldn’t graduate school and become a marketer or a salesman for a big company, I would really like to try out a nonprofit organization. The World Wildlife Foundation is an organization that really interests me. I’ve always had a love for animals and have always felt effected when I see those ads in magazines saying that we are killing the environment or that animals are on the fast track to becoming extinct.

Ever since I was a little kid, I thought that my grandpa was a superhero. I soon became very interested with his profession of selling wood for 84 Lumber. Being in college and trying for my marketing degree, concentrating in sales, I found 84 Lumber’s newest commercial since the Super Bowl to be an interesting topic to review.
